Every season so far, I could rave about my love for the destination. Everyone who has ever been to Gran Canaria told me how great it is and how much we’d love it. People told me how lovely it was and other reps told how they had such a great season. I had such high expectations but I just don’t see it and I’m really not feeling it. I’ve been in Gran Canaria for four weeks now and I’m just not getting it. I’m struggling to find something special about it and I’m so not in love with it.
From day one, it has been a struggle. We arrived and were put in an apartment which was basically a prison cell. It was a shit hole, we had no hot water and only one tiny hob to cook on which took me over an hour to cook pasta. It was a huge disappointment and we joked about getting back on the plane back home. On that first day, we worried about this season but shrugged it off. It was definitely not love at first sight.
Over the next few days, things picked up. We got used to the apartment, especially when we were only staying there for a week, we met the other reps and we saw a few nice places on some of the excursions.
Then came the start of work. It is so quiet that it is ridiculous. I’m so used to being busy at work that I don’t know what to do with myself. Arrivals are low and even when you do have arrivals, it’s rare you see them. One week, I had 17 arrivals… how are you supposed to make money with no customers? I spent three full days not seeing a single person. It makes my job very easy not having anything to do but also very, very, very boring. I have six hotels and I pretty much see no one, all day, every day.
It also seems like a very boring destination. After spending our first day off in the pub socialising, we wanted to do something and see something for our second. A Google of ‘things to do in Gran Canaria’ came up disappointing. Basically, unless you want to go to the beach or a nightclub, you’re fresh out of luck. When I’m in a destination, I want to explore but there is nothing and no where to explore. So, our days off are spent at the pub…
Don’t get me wrong, the team is great. We both get on really well with everyone. It’s a really nice atmosphere because everyone gets on. But let me tell you, sitting in the same pub all of the time watching football with the same group of people talking about the same old shit gets old pretty quick.
Overall, I’m just bored. I’m bored at home. I’m bored at work.
There is nothing striking me about Gran Canaria, there is nothing that has hit me and said WOW THIS ISLAND IS GREAT! There is nothing that is keeping me busy.
Honestly, we are looking forward to the end of this season. Maybe Cyprus spoilt us, I don’t know but I am just not in love with Gran Canaria. We can’t wait to get home to Cyprus. If we didn’t have each other, we wouldn’t still be here.
It pains me to say it because so far, I have loved every single season but sadly, this one is one that I won’t have endless stories about.
If anyone has any suggestions of things to do in Gran Canaria, please send them my way! We really need them!
