Last Summer, Bedford Street had life breathed back into it. Previously the only establishment that had a name for itself was the pub O’Connell’s. Everywhere else was run down or abandoned. Middlesbrough Council decided it was time to re-launch the street and give it a new personality. Modelling the street of London’s Borough Market, applications were sent in for spot on the brand spanking new street. All businesses are independently run and they definitely picked the best. Bedford Street now has a new lease of life with some incredible places and I’ve made it my mission over Winter to work my way along the street.
Songbird Bakery was the first on my list when I arrived back in the UK as I love a good cupcake. This darling little venue has a beautiful decor and a joyous atmosphere serving up some delicious cupcakes and occasionally, brownies. Every cupcake is moist and delicious with varieties changing daily and specials on a Saturday. Every cupcake I’ve had has been a delight so you’ll be fine with whatever you choose but aren’t these unicorn cupcakes just the cutest?
BEDFORD STREET COFFEE
This coffee shop is such a warming environment with a great selection of coffee on offer. I tried the soup during my visit which was delicious and creamy whilst the sandwiches and pastries also look delicious. Their tea and coffee choices give you some great options and step away from your typical menus.
A gourment pizza bar with great ingredients and a great variety of pizzas. Stepping away from your typical pizza selections, Barbarosssa offer great options for pizza toppings with a crispy sourdough base which is oven fired in the open view kitchen. I always love being able to see behind the scenes in restaurants.
The Chairman has a menu which changes regularly depending on what the chefs want to dish up and there is always a unique selection of specials. We went for a tapas style meal ordering a few dishes between us. Salt & pepper chicken, chilli battered halloumi, garlic mushrooms and chorizo & chilli prawns were served up in front of us and every single dish was incredible. So much flavour is every mouthful!
The Nuthatch has haunted me on Instagram ever since it opened. Their cocktails are Instaperfection and I can’t resist a good looking cocktail. The bar is so popular that you need to book a table online well in advance. When I eventually scored a table, I was not disappointed by the cocktail menu and my choices. The menu is like the holy grail of cocktails, I wanted pretty much every single one. All of the cocktails are so unique to The Nuthatch and sound so delicious that it’s hard to pick one. Copper Rose is a beautiful fruity flavour with a floral twist. Chilli & Mango Mojito is a great take on a mojito with a weirdly, pleasing kick. The Elyxir is served up in an incredible golden pineapple. Blueberry Amaretto Sour is a glorious twist on a classic. Every option is pretty much a winner.
In my opinion, there are not enough Mexican food joints and so I was all over Mohujo’s. Their takeaway burritos are jam packed and full of flavour and can be complimented with Mexican soda.
THE CURING HOUSE
I’ve never done brunch before but knew I had to when I saw their delicious menu. My very first eggs benedict did not disappoint and their variety gives options for everyone. The decor of the restaurant is simple but beautiful and gives the venue a relaxed atmosphere.
